Stretching along the Atlantic in southwestern Spain, the Costa de la Luz (“Coast of Light”) lives up to its name with wide, golden beaches and dazzling sunsets. From the sand dunes of Doñana National Park to the windswept shores near Tarifa, this is a coastline made for long walks, ocean views, and a slower pace of life. Historic towns dot the shore, each with its own character. Cádiz, one of the oldest cities in Western Europe, invites you to wander its maze of narrow streets, climb the cathedral tower, and linger in lively plazas with a glass of sherry. Farther south, Tarifa is the meeting point of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean—and a paradise for windsurfers and kitesurfers. Traditional whitewashed villages like Conil de la Frontera and Vejer de la Frontera offer charming old quarters, local markets, and spectacular viewpoints. Food is a highlight of any trip to the Costa de la Luz. Fishermen still bring in the catch of the day, which ends up as crisp fried fish (“pescaíto frito”), grilled tuna from almadraba traps, and fresh seafood stews in simple beach bars called chiringuitos. Inland, you’ll find Iberian ham from the nearby Sierra de Huelva, hearty stews, and fragrant wines and sherries from Jerez de la Frontera. Nature lovers will find plenty to explore beyond the beaches. Doñana National Park is one of Europe’s most important wetlands, home to migrating birds, wild horses, and, with luck, the elusive Iberian lynx. Coastal trails around Zahara de los Atunes and Bolonia lead to Roman ruins, hidden coves, and panoramic clifftop views.
